About Kas |
Kas
is a nice little town at the South Coast of Turkey with about
8000 inhabitants.
Kas is surrounded by a most beautiful
coastline: the peninsula of Kas, Limanağzı, the Greek island
of Meis and many small islands in between. Approximately
2000 years ago this region belonged to the Lycian Empire. |

|
| This
is why the area here is called the "Lycian Coast",
with numerous tombs and other ancient ruins. Just 10 minutes
on foot from the town centre of Kas you will find an old
amphitheatre, just by the seaside. |
|
The
King`s Tomb in the centre of Kas is more than 2000 years old. But
you will also find more examples of Lycian art and culture in many other
places nearby. Something which will immediately catch
your eye are the historic houses with their wooden balconies. The
town centre consists of many small alleys and little streets - too
narrow for cars to pass. And this is exactly what makes the
difference about Kas: At night the whole place resembles one big
living room with bars,
restaurants and little cafés all over the place.
Handmade
carpets and other woven items are made here. Carpets called
"Barak Kilimi" made of long strands of goat hair are
popular. Dastar, tulbent and yemeni style head carves are made and
sold as souvenirs. Decorative walnut chests and small wooden
tables, spoons and rolling pins are also popular in Kas. |
A
Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild winters,
prevails in Kas. The average temperature is between 68 -
83 F (20 - 28 C) in high season (May - September); light,
cotton summer clothing and cardigans for evening is
recommended. |
Kas
enjoys the clear, clean waters of the Mediterranean Sea
without water pollution problems. Good fishing centers
mostly on red sea bream, lobster, bonito, red and gray
mullet and goby. Fresh lobster and octopus are also
served daily in the restaurants.
These
species, grown in Kas's mountains, are used for tea and
as spices for food. Their benefits include easing
digestion and calming nerves. They are also oused as
ingredients in some medicines, which are exported. |
|

Kas
is 192 km from the Antalya Airport and 160 km from the
Dalaman Airport. Ground transportation from airport to
Kas is usually by bus or taxi. |
